Choosing Flowers for Your Maui Wedding
No Maui wedding would be complete without some fragrant flowers. At the heart of Hawaii is the lei, traditionally used for greetings and the showing of aloha. Every one of our packages includes two leis for the bride and groom to exchange during the lei exchange during John's ceremonies. We also include a bridal bouquet and a groom's bouttinere within our White Orchid Wedding Package. Keep in mind that you can add any flowers you want to your package from our Ala Carte Menu. As you'll see below, we offer many different floral accessories for your Maui wedding.

Maui Wedding Leis

The Hawaiians believe that giving of the lei with a kiss imparts a special aloha (love). We therefore encourage our brides and grooms to give each other a kiss on both cheeks when they place the Maui lei around the neck of their beloved. And as part of all of our Maui Wedding Packages, we include two leis for a lei exchange for the bride and groom.

Many of our leis are fresh and custom-made for us by a local Hawaiian woman who grows most of her own flowers. Our florist also provides us with leis but she does not grow her own flowers. In both cases, of course, flowers are seasonal and we can't always obtain the same flowers year-round. Therefore we offer to all of our couples the choice between vibrant and pastel for your wedding leis. (The leis in the photo on the left are vibrant; the ones below on the right are pastel).

If you want to spread the aloha, you may also want to order extra flower leis for members of your wedding party. Very often the bride and groom (or someone else in the party) will want to give leis to members of their party before or during the wedding. Leis can also be given to children.

A traditional maile lei for men is made of green leafy plants and is open on the ends (so that it hangs down the groom's chest). Because the plants that are used for making this lei are grown off-island, these leis are a little more expensive than our regular leis.

We also have a less expensive lei available for men which we call the groom's ti leaf lei. These leis can be open like the maile lei or connected in a circle like a traditional lei. This is much easier to get than the maile lei.

When you order any of our standard packages (without making any changes in your package) you can specify whether you want the more subdued pastel colors or the more vibrant flowers. If you would like to add a particular any other particular style of lei (like a groom's ti leaf or maile lei) you can see the charges for those on our Ala Carte Menu page.

The Haku (or Head Flower Lei)

The head lei is called the haku. It can be worn high on the hair or a little lower on the forehead, depending upon your preferences and the way it looks on you. When you order a haku, you will need to provide us with the measurements of your head at the place where the lei will go so that we can have it made the right length. These leis have a tie in the back for adjustment purposes in the event it is a little short or long for your head.

On the right you can see an example of a rose based haku worn by Nikki. The haku is probably not going to look as well if you are going to have your hair done by one of our hair and make-up people.

Adding A Hawaiian Bouquet to Your Package

There are no bouquets in our packages except in our White Orchid Package. The bridal bouquets come in two general shapes, cascade and hand-tied. You can see two examples of hand-tied bouquets below. For all of our other packages, if you want to add a bouquet, please feel free to talk to us when you book to and we can you more information about other choices you might want to consider.

The hand tied style is a round shape, approximately 8 inches round. It includes a lace backing and ribbon depending on the flowers used. One popular hand tied bouquet is a cluster of solid roses that are tied together with the stems showing, laced in satin ribbon. We are often able to offer extra large roses from South America. (See the picture of our bride with red roses above). Our White Orchid Package comes with a hand-tied bouquet.

A cascade is a bouquet in a flowering teardrop shape. All cascades come with lace backings and ribbon. This bouquet hangs down in a cascading teardrop fashion. We offer a medium and deluxe cascading bouquets. The deluxe is a cascade with more flowers and generally with two star gazer lilies. (See the photos above). Unless they are hand-tied, most of our bouquets are firmly mounted in a small holder so that you can conveniently hold them during your ceremony and afterward during the picture taking. As you can see cascades come in many different versions depending upon the flowers chosen.

The Circle of Flowers

The circle of flowers is a six foot in diameter circle made up of fresh cut flowers that are placed upon the ground around where you will be married. You will be able to stand amidst the splendor and fragrance of these flowers on the beach or on a lawn overlooking the beach as you say your vows to each other.

These flowers are generally spiked down or stuck into the sand to keep them from moving in the breeze. We should mention that a bride's train, if allowed to drag as she steps into the circle, can in some cases take a few of the flowers with it. So it should always be lifted as she steps into the circle.

We always choose the best dry area on the sand to place the flowers, it is possible that the ocean will sometimes send one or two higher waves up on the beach and it might reach your circle. We've never lost a circle, but we have had to move a couple. Part of the joy of having your wedding take place on the beach is the fun of being in the unpredictable natural elements just as they are.

Making Your Maui Flower Choices

From a photographic standpoint, we often use the flowers that you have chosen to help enhance your photo images. We use them to place them in front of our couples when she is seated on beach; standing behind the cake or sparkling apple cider table, within a heart in the sand where we write the words: "Just Maui'd", etc. You'll find that your flowers will add a great finishing touch to so many of the photos you will receive in your Maui wedding photography package.

With this in mind, many of our couples want to enhance the flowers that they receive in their package. Also, if you are ordering ala carte, you will want to know what types of flower choices our florist can offer to you here on Maui. The following table summarizes some of the different flower arrangements that we have available. For prices, see the Ala Carte page.
